Learning how to be a hacker – From zero to hero

A quick story

More than anything, I always had something inside me that makes me want to understand how things work.

Since I was a kid, I peppered my mother with questions about how the stove worked, how a plane can fly without falling down, or how a VHS (I’m showing my age here!) can record and display images on TV.

After 10 hours of manual work, is not something you are looking forward to when you come home, so she bought me this book:

I absolutely loved it, but only gave me more questions to ask. So I started answering my own questions…by bringing Video recorders and TV from the garbage bin (yeah, I know…) to open them and see what was inside.

Decades later, and a programmer by trade, I still have the same spirit, but with programming.

Why are you telling us that?

Because, as I have said, I have the same drive to learn how everything works. And how better than looking inside of things to see how they work?

So in a few months, I’m going to start training as an Ethical Hacker. I’m going to learn a whole load of concepts, from Ethical hacking to forensic analysis, Cybersecurity normative, security hardening, and more.

Yeah, but…why are you telling us that?

Oh… I see. Good question.

While I’m going to learn hacking and get a professional certification in my country, starting in October 2023, I’m going to start learning on the 1st of June, and keep training by myself, pairing it with the ‘official’ training.

In fact, I’m going to spend more time learning on my own, daily (yes, no matter what, even on New Year’s Eve) using online resources. Online resources that I’m going to share here.

I will document my steps in learning how to hack, so you can learn too using the same resources I do. Also, you can have a laugh about how many mistakes and problems I fail to solve.

This blog is going to be my diary, where I list every resource I use, every website I read, and every video I watch to learn how to hack. Also, I will make small tutorials of hacking tools I use, Capture The Flag writeups where I explain how I solved it, and more.

You can learn how I have learnt on my own, to learn yourself.

So, let’s learn.

Cool I guess… how this works?

On Twitter, I’ll be using the #FromZeroToHacker tag and each day I’ll write a summary of what I have learnt that day. At the bottom, a link to a blog entry where I explain what I have learnt, the resources I have used, links to videos, and more.

An image, a summary of what I have learnt, a long and detailed explanation and a resource list at the end of the blog post, and you’ll be ready to learn.

There is a lot to learn about hacking, so I’ll be providing a learning pathway.

When are you starting?

I’ll be starting on the 1st of June, 2023 and I’ll end on the 31st of May, 2024. One full year of hacking learning!

What I can do to learn too?

If you are interested, follow me on Twitter where I’ll be publishing, at least, one Tweet daily. You can talk to me and I’ll reply in less than 24 hours.

You can also check daily this website, LetsLearnAbout.net, as I’ll be writing a new blog post each day too. I have the comments section open too, so unless you link me to some strange website, I’ll approve it and answer you.

Time to learn!

Edit: I already started the challenge. Here is my first day.
